South Dakota Power Cooperative Chooses Exalt

Reliable, High-Speed Microwave Radio System Supports Power Management Network

Campbell, Calif., June 16, 2009 — Exalt Communications, the company that is reinventing microwave backhaul, announced today that the East River Electric Power Cooperative, a wholesale electric power cooperative serving a 36,000-square mile area in South Dakota and western Minnesota, has deployed its EX-2.4i and EX-2.4i-16 microwave radio systems. The new Exalt systems are being used to upgrade legacy radio links of up to 30 miles between remote substations and other facilities, and the cooperative’s SONET fiber ring.

“Some of our older microwave radio links had reliability problems and we wanted to add bandwidth, so we evaluated a number of systems,” said Scott Seitz, microwave foreman for the East River Electric Power Cooperative. “We chose Exalt radios for their superior performance and reliability, and because the web-based management system allows us to remotely configure the radios and save the cost of rolling a truck.”

The EX-2.4i microwave radio systems can support up to 200 megabits per second (Mbps) of Ethernet data and either four (EX-2.4i) or sixteen (EX-2.4i-16) T1 lines with the company’s exclusive CarrierTDD™ technology, which provides 99.999% throughput availability. In the East River Electric Power Cooperative network, the links carry substation and power management data as well as the company’s 800 MHz voice radio system, which is used for communications by maintenance personnel.
