City of Garland, Texas Cuts Costs and Gains Bandwidth with Exalt Microwave Backhaul Systems

All-Indoor Systems Eliminate Leased T1 Lines, Provide Scalability for Advanced Applications

CAMPBELL, Calif., April 27, 2010 – Exalt Communications, the company that is reinventing microwave backhaul, today announced that the city of Garland, Texas has deployed Exalt microwave backhaul systems to deliver critical network connections for city services. The Exalt microwave backhaul systems eliminate recurring charges from leased T1 lines while significantly increasing available network throughput, enabling the City of Garland to better serve its citizens and save money in the process.

“I have worked with microwave systems from many different vendors over the years, but the Exalt systems stand out for their low latency, native TDM capabilities and their built-in spectrum analyzer,” said Jonathan Morgan, IT Radio Communications manager for the City of Garland. “By deploying these units, we get ten times the bandwidth at the standard 27 megabits-per-second configuration with the ability to upgrade to 100 megabits if necessary through a simple software license. By eliminating recurring leased line costs, we expect a return on our investment in a year or less.”

The Exalt all-indoor 5 GHz and 11 GHz systems deployed in the City of Garland serve police and fire stations, recreation centers, and a senior center where fiber is unavailable. The Exalt systems support connectivity in a redundant communications ring while also serving as a highly reliable backup for fiber connections between the City’s network operations centers.

The first Exalt systems were deployed by the City of Garland in early 2009 and have been completely reliable. “We have had zero downtime, no equipment failures and terrific service from Exalt,” added Morgan. “In addition, the systems will scale easily up to 100 Mbps of aggregate throughput so the City can easily support more bandwidth-intensive applications in the future.

“At Exalt, we understand the backhaul problems our customers face and create systems that solve them,” said Amir Zoufonoun, president and CEO of Exalt Communications. ”By building native TDM and scalable Ethernet into every Exalt system, we give cities like Garland a broad choice of reliable, high-performance backhaul solutions. “Whether upgrading T1 connections, linking remote sites where alternatives are unavailable or providing a far more cost-effective and often more reliable solution than fiber, Exalt microwave systems deliver the best value in the industry.”

The Exalt Microwave Backhaul Product Portfolio
All Exalt microwave backhaul systems offer guaranteed link availability, guaranteed throughput and low, constant latency. Systems are available in world bands from 2 to 40 GHz and in capacities from 10 Mbps to more than 1000 Mbps per channel, providing a range of options to fit countless network applications. Designed to enable a smooth transition to IP, they offer native support for both TDM and Ethernet, and are fully software configurable and upgradeable. For easy and secure management using third-party network management systems, Exalt systems support SNMP v1, v2c and v3. Data security is provided by available FIPS 197-compliant AES 128-bit and 256-bit encryption that adds zero latency to the transmission. To simplify installation and maintenance, all Exalt systems feature an embedded manual and most include a built-in spectrum analyzer.
